About the 6th R&D, Corporate Innovation & Start-ups Venturing Summit

What are the secrets of successful corporate innovation strategies for organisations of all sizes?

What is the key to establishing sustainable corporate innovation?

Most corporate innovations focus heavily on breakthrough innovations, new technologies, and partnerships with internal and external innovation communities, providing answers to major global challenges.

The vast majority of corporate projects are digital, and digital innovation now is a core to corporate growth strategies.

Open innovation, corporate venturing, and digital transformation are crucial areas for establishing sustainable R&D and corporate growth.

How are companies transforming their innovation systems?

  • The innovation landscape has been significantly disrupted due to shifts in consumer behaviour, advancements in science and technology, and the convergence of various industries.
  • In recent years, open innovation has emerged as a transformative force, playing a crucial role in driving successful research and development (R&D) within corporate innovation.
  • Open innovation, which involves collaboration between corporations and startups, has proved instrumental in transferring the agility and technological prowess of startups to larger companies. This collaboration creates a value proposition that has the potential to be highly disruptive.
  • By fostering a collaborative mindset and moving away from traditional notions of competition, open innovation breaks down barriers and unlocks a wide range of opportunities for value creation through partnerships and collaborations.
  • Current social and technological shifts have prompted companies to become more agile and pivot in innovative ways, leading to new opportunities for business growth.

Benefits of Open Innovation:

  • Open innovation enables the creation and launch of new products and services through mutually beneficial relationships.
  • It combines the agility and fresh ideas of startups and entrepreneurs with the financial power and experience of corporations, resulting in highly profitable partnerships.
  • Through open innovation, organisations can tap into hidden potential and unlock value in long-lasting partnerships.

Challenges Faced by Innovation Leaders:

  • Rapid shifts in customer needs
  • Biases towards technology evaluation
  • Identifying and addressing new opportunities promptly
  • Reevaluating the innovation portfolio
  • Ensuring proper allocation of resources
  • Lack of long-term strategy
  • Internal misalignment with key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Unclear regulations
  • Complex regional differentiation
  • Balancing top-down and bottom-up management
  • Breaking down silos between corporate research and corporate venturing departments
  • Building resilience and growth in the face of uncertainty
  • Reinventing relationships with other market players
  • Learning from startups to improve internal R&D processes

Shift Towards Corporate Venturing and Open Innovation:

  • Corporate venturing and open innovation mechanisms have gained prominence over traditional R&D centres.
  • Corporate venturing plays a critical role in accelerating innovation strategies and accessing new ideas, technologies, and business models.
  • Despite the potential benefits, the failure rate of open innovations stands at approximately 90% due to corporate cultures that resist embracing new ideas and experimentation.
  • Nevertheless, the progress of a collaboration between a corporation and a startup can be hindered by the tedious nature of legal and bureaucratic processes. Selecting an appropriate partner, establishing clear objectives, and forming effective collaboration teams present considerable challenges, often resulting in the failure of many partnerships before they even take off.
  • As digitisation rapidly reshapes industries across the globe, leaders are using corporate venture capitals (CVCs), and other venturing tools, like innovation labs, incubators, accelerators, and innovation programs to gain access to new technologies and accelerate innovation.

Looking to successful examples of efficient collaborations, and being inspired by the, Airbnb, Spotify as well as other examples of the most innovative companies, with the recognised innovation leaders at the 6th R&D, Corporate Innovation, & Startups Venturing on October 5-6, 2023, in Berlin, Germany, we will explore:

  • How to respond to recent innovation trends in 2023 and to accelerate exponential innovation
  • What are conclusions and tips for successful corporate innovations?
  • How to enable sustainable corporate development through new R&D agendas, innovation culture and novel digital capacities
  • How to efficiently build corporate ventures
  • How to build the roadmap where both organisation and startup benefit from corporate venture capital
  • How to make successful partnership between startups and established companies

See you in-person in Berlin, Germany, at the #VLOpenInn 2023!
