Dr. Peter Rössger, DE

Founder

Beyond HMI

Peter Rössger is the founder and owner of beyond HMI/////. beyond HMI///// focusses on creating knowledge on humans in autonomous driving, HMI concepts, usability and user experience for the automotive industry, the industrial internet, mobile machinery and software applications. They perform studies on markets, cultures, usability and user experience. Their strategic market analysis gives deep insights into automotive markets, the future of mobility, usability and user experience trends and technologies. The target is to lift their clients to new levels of business, success and satisfaction. They use their knowledge to develop HMI concepts for customers. This includes development of strategic options, team coaching, development of scenarios, user journeys, use case identification, interaction designs and the roll out of specifications, among others. Peter is assistant professor for human factors at the International School of Management, at the Hochschule Esslingen and the Joanneum Graz (Austria). In 2017 he received the certification as a systemic management coach by the ICF. Until early 2015, Peter was business development director at TES Electronic Solutions GmbH. During his 12 years with Harman Automotive he created HMI concepts for automotive OEMs like Mercedes, Porsche, Toyota, Hyundai, PSA, Ferrari, Chrysler and Harley Davidson. For Daimler, he worked 4 years in driver-vehicle interaction. Peter holds a doctoral degree in human factors engineering from the Technical University of Berlin. He published various papers on usability, user experience, cross cultural HMIs and autonomous driving. His first book was published on Amazon KDP in November 2016

Dr. Nils Lenke, DE

Senior Director Innovation Management Automotive

Cerence Inc.

As senior director of innovation management, Nils Lenke is managing a team focused on disruptive innovation within Cerence Inc. (previously the Nuance Automotive Division.) His team works especially on multi-modality of the HMI in the car, the cockpit of the future, and new hardware architectures. As part of this, Nils also manages technology partnerships and academic co-operations. He has a strong background in research: as a board member he is also represents Cerence Inc. as a shareholder at the DFKI, the German AI Research Centre – the world’s largest AI center. Before changing into his automotive role, he had been coordinating Nuance corporate research for almost 10 years. In that period Nils was responsible for organizing the internal research conferences and orchestrating research activities on knowledge presentation, deep learning and voice recognition, as well as natural language understanding and other technologies needed for AI-based virtual assistants. Nils has been with Cerence Inc./Nuance (before: ScanSoft) since 2003 after filling different roles at Philips Speech Processing for close to a decade. He holds a master’s degree from the University of Bonn for his thesis on “The communication model of AI research”, as well as a diploma in computer science from the University of Koblenz and a PhD in computer linguistics from the University of Duisburg for his dissertation in AI on natural language generation of paraphrases. Since this is clearly not enough, he also holds a master’s degree from the University of Hagen in environmental sciences. Nils currently holds nine patents and speaks six languages – including his native tongue German, as well as a bit of Russian and Mandarin. In his spare time, Nils likes hiking and scanning archives for documents on the history of science (especially astronomy and alchemy) in the early modern period.
